Stevia is Botanically known as Stevia rebaudiana, It is a natural sweetener and sugar substitute (steviol glycosides) derived from the leaves of the plant. It is approximately 30 to 150 times sweeter than sugar. The human body does not metabolize the glycosides in stevia, so it contains zero calories, like artificial sweeteners. Stevia's taste has a slower onset and longer duration than that of sugar.

Stevia, scientifically known as Stevia rebaudiana, has been celebrated for its sweet leaves and historical significance. Originating from Brazil and Paraguay, stevia has been traditionally used to sweeten teas and medicines, offering a natural alternative to sugar.

Cultural Heritage:

Stevia's journey from local use in South America to global recognition underscores its versatility and appeal. In Japan, stevia extracts are widely used in food products and beverages, showcasing its acceptance and integration into various culinary traditions. The plant's popularity in the natural foods and health food industries in the U.S. during the mid-1980s further highlights its role as a favored natural sweetener.

Growing Tips:

  • Location Flexibility: It can be grown in a variety of settings, including pots, hanging baskets, or directly in the ground.
  • Watering: Stevia plants prefer moist soil; however, it is crucial to avoid overwatering to prevent harm to the plant.
